I Graduated In Ohhh… Sh*t
It’s bound to happen. You’re in the work place and someone asks you where you went to school. Before you know it, you’re talking about when you graduated and you’re going through the mental Rolodex to see if you know any of their friends that went there too. At first these conversations are light and vivid because, well, it’s fresh in your mind. They call you a baby and you still have that glimmer of joy in your eyes about school.
Eventually there will be a day when someone will ask you when you graduated and you’ll hesitate. The subtraction gets a bit more difficult. The years are adding up. The memories are fewer and fuzzier. And then you finally realize that you’ve been out of school for a long damn time.
In between all the happy hours, long nights and early mornings, the years just flew by. Good times in school were replaced by good times in the real world. But as we all know, nothing is like college.
I saw the possibilities as soon as my parents dropped me off. After unpacking my stuff and settling into my freshman dorm, my boys and I quickly realized it was the perfect storm. We lived in a Co-Ed dorm, a few of my boys kept a young lady named Mary Jane tight, my other boy looked like a 25 year old man with an ID to match and both of the RAs were alcoholics who’d drink with us.
It didn’t take us long to start throwing floor parties where each room was a different experience. We had the whole floor packed up with people diving in and out of rooms to take a shot of this, do a rip of that and dance it off. Or do other things under the influence. It got so bad, or good depending on how you look at it, that freshman from dorms across the campus were trooping over to party too. And after awhile the Syracuse city police were close behind.
Damn. I kind of miss dorm life.
Now I’ve thrown parties, I’ve been to parties, but nothing compared to the celebration that kicked off after Syracuse won the NCAA Championship. As soon as the game clock hit zero, thousands of hyped up students poured out of the stands of the Carrier Dome, all the dorms on campus and both the decrepit and luxurious off-campus houses to meet on Marshall Street. It was the one strip of bars that kept the whole campus hydrated.
I’ve never seen so many people in one small place at one time. People were climbing the trees and light poles. Women were on dudes shoulders and flashing the crowd. Black people were partying and watching all this foolishness go down. But I had to cut my trip to M Street short since I had run to the Sigma house to set up for my crossing party.
Yes, my crossing party was the same night Cuse basketball won the chip. People of color found their way to the house for shots of Southern Comfort, loud music & a packed basement. Things were fuzzy, but I do remember leaving at 6am to stumble back to my dorm and people were still winding downstairs. And that’s all I can say about that.
That one experience set the bar pretty high and not many nights compared. At least I think so anyway.
A few of them have their own special place in the memory banks though. Like senior year when a crew of Cocksmen descended on a campus bar to wreak havoc fueled on SoCo & Limes, Coronas, Yager Bombs & whatever else was handed over to us. A usual stint. But after this night of recklessness that can’t be put into words because I don’t drop dimes because I can’t remember, we walked out of the bar with our sunglasses on and decided to pose in the middle of the street.
Why were we wearing sunglasses at night? Well because we were shining so bright. And I believe we yelled that at some point. Don’t worry, I’m a lot more humble now. Sometimes. We then proceeded to stand on top of our boy’s Lincoln Navigator, point at the sky and stunt while posing for pictures. Shots that have disappeared by the way.
Oh yeah it was reckless, but it’s a priceless memory I’ll hold onto for awhile. When my kids ask my why people drove such big cars back then, I’ll explain what stunting like your daddy means.
There are many more I can’t talk about for various reasons. Some too X Rated, others too incriminating and others are just funny to whoever was around. Please know that college left me with a bunch of memories that immediately make me smile and chuckle to myself. And I’m sure it left you with a few too.
Let’s reminisce a bit to get us through this hump day. Where did you go to school? When did you graduate? What are a few of your favorite memories – funny, stupid, X Rated or otherwise.
Road trip anyone?

Haha this was a great one!!! I seriously can’t picture you being as rowdy and so full of yourself, actually I do, in college…
I honestly think that my college experience, even to this date, does not compare to any one’s college experience, specially those in the east coast. Too many 2520s here…
All I remember in college is my first autopsy, that’s my highlight!, few very, very, very drunken nights, parties, and that’s about it, lol…

Where did you go to school? The University of Alabama (ROLLLL TIDEEEEE) (I’m now in Grad school at Hofstra).
When did you graduate? December 2009.

The x-rated memory that came to mind made me giggle & i will not share that one!
Traveling to Mississippi always had its fun moments like the first & only time i went into a strip club (under the influence of 151) & my friends had to sneak me in cause i was under 21…that was when i was exposed to pregnant strippers that said bay-bay a lot & glow in the dark cl*t piercings…it was quite the night…
One of my favorite times on campus was going on the strip w/ two of my favorite Ques to bar hop…this was before the houndstooth was renovated & cheap shots was still open! I also had great times pre-gaming with my sorors!
I had some good times in the south…i miss it! #deepsigh Great Post!

Some more memories:
-When Katrina was hitting NO but we were getting some of the bad weather, we had this lady from the University staying on our floor…we were in a Co-Ed dorm so dudes were coming up to our floor. The lady was getting mad & trying to regulate us & them. I decided to really piss her off & walk to the bathroom in my towel…yea, she wasn’t too happy about that!
-Giving dancing lessons to a rhythmless girl (She was biracial & lived in Hawaii, no idea how that worked).
-Racing up & down the halls in my motorized wheelchair (long story, i’m not in one anymore).
-Chillin at the front desk as an RA & having dance parties & booty poppin 101 lessons for other RAs (All girls dorm).
-Once when i busted an underage resident w/ alcohol, she begged & pleaded for me not to write her up, she even offered to clean the bathrooms (they were nasty too).
Man, i had some awesome times at UA!

I graduated from St. John’s University in May 09. *giggles* I had an effing blast in undergrad!
-I was in a friend’s suite and we were bored. One of them pulled out some “snow” and we proceeded to try to make “snow flakes”. We didn’t have baking soda so we used toothpaste with baking soda. No stove in the suite so we got the water boiling my microwaving it every 5mins. While doing this a surprise suite inspection was called by the RAs. LMAO. hilarious night trying to hide Whitney Houston’s favorite form of precipitation.
-My 18th b-day. SJU has gates around campus that close at midnight except 1 gate. It’s also a dry campus so they can deny you entry if they suspect you’re “high”. I was completely wrecked and they told me and my friends we couldn’t come on campus now. We walked all the way to another gate and tried to crawl under and bet the bars. Prob was most of us had on leather coats and we got stuck and ripped our coats and had to run from public safety. While running I slowed down to puke and 1 of the security guards tripped on my puke.
I loved college!

University of Minnesota; May 2005.
ironically, some of my best memories are from random road trips to Iowa State/Drake Univ.(those were the closest schools to road trip too, the bruhs were cool, and the sorors were cute. don’t judge me)
Drake Relays, circa April 2005:
i road tripped down there with one of my chapter bruhs. i got arrested for stealing my own car from the tow truck lot…and got a gun pulled on me by the police, all in one night…smh
Fall 2001:
This linebacker sized Que (6’4″ / 230) tried to break our stroll line, right.in.front.of.me. (5’9″ 180)…so i pushed the sh*t out of him and he fell into the wall…which of course made everyone go nuts. luckily, one of the Que old heads saw the whole incident and stopped it before it escalated….cause i was about to take a major L….

I miss so much about college but if it wasn’t the feeling of going back to campus when we won the NCAA championship this year, it had to be the late nights after a party. All the black folks would go this on campus diner and sit around chat for an hour before dancing the night away at the alpha house. Those were always the most treacherous nights and someone always took a picture. Smh- ruining political careers

Everything after my parents dropped me off to school is a blur. I remember sobering up for a while just get my ass beat for weeks on end. I woke up one morning, and there were gold boots at the bottom of my steps, and everything became a blur again. Next thing I remember after that is waking up in a horrible staff meeting of a horrible insurance agency. Maybe SW and BBW can fill in the blanks, cuz I can’t remember sh*t.

Hood College; May 2008
Man being a group of black kids at a PWI created so much havoc.
I remember the annual Foam Parties on the Quad – classic nekkidness. I don’t think the 2520s were ready for our type of nekkid. My first yr on campus they served alcohol @ the parties. Each dorm was allowed to sponsor a party per semester. RATCHEDNESS on steroids. LOL. My very first party… there were soooo many reggins from the neighboring community college I forgot that I was at a PWI. It was like a dancehall in the mug… alcohol flowing, bodies sweating… it was hot in there the walls were sweating. The campus security served as bouncers, lol. They had to stop letting folks in until others came out.
Spring Parties – A 3 day weekend (created by Hood) of nothing my back to back parties, pj jams and fashion shows. I don’t think the 2520s know what a black girl’s body can do to a simple pair of pjs. MAN… it seemed like the whole DC area used to flood our college. Epic. Nothing was like the spring parties of my freshie & sophomore yrs. By my junior year security was scared of all the black folk and had cut the number of guests per person from unlimited to 3.

My crossing party was one of the most epic parties ever. Not just because I crossed, like that night inspired MADD greeks in NYC when they were interests to join (other frats might nto admit it but proof is proof). I think 95% of the dudes in Hofstra USA won that night. Unfortunately, I was in the 5% lol… I was on a superman high like no other. One of the greatest moments of my life.
Then we can talk about playing ManHunt in the Nassau/Suffolk dorm when a blackout in the building happened.
Or the billion roadtrips we took to UMCP, Bingo, Cuse, ROC, CALI, NC, Etc.
Cornell in 03. Wow is all I can say. I knew how the Prince of Zamunda felt.
Then the end of the year scramble for meal points where our Caucasian brothers and sisters would be Blowin MealPoints Fast buying crates of ish and letting you live off a swipe.
P.S. – Shoutout to all the greeks who come to Hofstra to get meal swipes -__- lol

i remember the night before graduation. that was possibly the drunkest i’ve been in my entire life. i was so drunk i was dance battling some chick in the middle of a house party to house music. i ended up passing out on my floor of my dorm room. my ex was so pissed at me. lol she put toothpaste and rose petals all over my face then proceeded to take pictures. the next morning i missed practice. i threw up the bathroom right before we went through the tunnel. i fell asleep during the key note speaker and i was still drunk walking across stage. good times. hard to believe i graduated magna cum laude.

One day, I went to a friend’s spot to play some cards. Just before we got there, 2 of the other roommates got into a fight and one fired his gun into the air outside the place. The roommate that fired the gun was just sitting outside on his car in the driveway, talking shit, when we got there. We all knew that he was off so we just kept it cordial and went on inside.
So we get inside and get told wheat happened. As we’re getting ready to play some cards, somebody notices a man in SWAT gear walk past one of the windows. He had been smoking some weed so he just shrugged it off. But then, we hear a big pounding on the locked front door. We think its the roommate that fired the gun that was outside on his car, so one of the other roommates says “What, Nigga!”. Only for a voice behind the door to say “Boone County Sheriff!!! Open up the door!!!!”
Needless to say, the 2 roommates get locked up and we were only able to get one out. Come to find out, the crazy roommate had a warrant for his arrest and was going to get extradicted back to the county where the warrant originated. So there was no possibility of us getting him released the same night.

So far college has been the best time of my life. I learned 1st semester that Friday classes were the debil Bobby Booshae.
Sweats and Adidas flip flops were my primary attire. So much so, dudes was shocked to find I had a body underneath. Class. Head to the pub. Eat. Class Nap. Volleyball practice. Nap. Class work. Whatever event was popping that night. Sleep.
Me and 2 of the homies would find a way to nap in a extra long twin bed while watching 106&Park (she had the TV).
Getting on line at 9am to get tickets for the party in Downs Hall. Party attire consisted of: fitted jeans, crips Timbs or Gortex’s, and wife beaters. I’d get wasted and starting freestyling, lol. I also learned about mixing light and dark liquors when I through up in my MJ Beat It leather jacket, smh
I was balling as a Resident Assistant with a $800 meal card AND I had my own apartment which I dubbed the penthouse.

Summer of 03 I went on “the streak” which continued into my junior year at 804 E. State Street where 9 of us lived in a house and threw reckless parties. Townies coming through and leaving crack on the floor when the police broke up the party. Watching walks of shame from my 1st floor doorway.

There was the Alpha/Delta when I tell you that line was out the door and around the corner? Jesus Freakin’ Christ. Did I mention I was a freshman? Anyway, PWI means the NPHC frats, at the time, didn’t have a permanent home, so they occupied the homes of whatever IFC frat had been kicked off. That year they were in one of the smaller houses but that did not stop us from packing it in. We were sneaking people in through the windows, back doors and the WALLS GOT WET… that happened frequently in that house.
The Zetas threw frequent slow grinds. Hella folks got caught up at those. Folks who come just to take pics of who was doing what with whom. And when FB got photos?? THE END.
My sophomore year, the Alphas threw a party in our brand new student life center. Huge area. Packed out (mostly NON VU students)…and of course folks got to fighting. (To have gone to a PWI, I sure did have to evacuate a lot of parties thanks to fighting). Alls I remember is being up on the stage with the DJ, seeing a chair go through a door and knowing instinctively we needed to pack up and be out. We get outside and there are cop cars EVERYWHERE as well as a freakin cop HELICOPTER… who DOES THAT?! Anyway. The next day the situation was reported as a “melee” in the campus newspaper. Haters.
We played serious spades in our dorms. Ain’t never met so many black folks who couldn’t play spades. I was DISTURBED.
But you know what I really miss? Walking down the hall/upstairs/next dorm over to grab a friend for a random adventure. It’s that simple stuff I miss.
::sigh:: Damn I miss undergrad.

Went to FAMU. Didn’t really take advantage of the full college or HBCU experience, but the best memory is of the house party my roommate and I threw for the third roommate’s 21st Bday. Sneakingly potent hunch punch, sixty pounds of grilled chicken completely gobbled up (plus some ribs that the FSU football players demolished), every bottle of liquor you can imagine, a cool dude who DJ’d for free, bodies packed everywhere, and the party so big it divided into the group that stayed at the house and those that dragged the drunken BDay girl off to the club. Next day, all that remained were the hangovers and the bottles of premium liquor that guests couldn’t finish.
