Did Barack Just Increase Our Ignorance?
Unless you live under a rock, you’re probably more than aware of the health care bill that was up for vote and recently got signed into law by Obama. I’ll be perfectly honest with you. I still don’t completely understand all the implications of the health care bill. I also found it quite cumbersome when I was trying to do research for this post. I read so many articles on each side of the spectrum on what I thought were “neutral” sites that I just got confused and gave up. To make it easier for myself, I’ve just decided that the bill will extend health care coverage to those who don’t generate enough income to purchase a much more expensive plan. That’s nothing new to me in Massachusetts, since all residents are required to have health care unless they want to face penalties in their taxes. They even have a government plan of sorts that provides low cost or free coverage in some instances. That’s not the purpose of this post today though.
As I’ve continued to read forum after forum and article after article, I’ve also continued to read the comments that fall beneath them. I’ve been checking out a lot of the dialogue on Facebook and Twitter from friends, former classmates, former teammates, family members (both virtual and real life), and random aliases that like to hop on CNN and come across as intellectual when they really don’t know a damn thing. In reading all of this, I’ve come to one grand conclusion.
There is a helluva lot of ignorance out there.
I know. If I want to win the Nobel Peace Prize, I have to come up with something a lot more ground-breaking than that. But quite honestly, ignorance never ceases to amaze me. Since this bill has been signed, I’ve started seeing a spike in comments about Obama being Hitler and the Anti-Christ. I’ve seen people write that they’re going to move to another country where they’re lives won’t be taken over by the government. I’ve seen people say that this legislation takes from the hard-working and gives to the worthless while also increasing our premiums. And just before I started writing, I was reading a lot of the commentary about this bill promoting the death of babies because it would fund abortion clinics. Again, I still don’t fully understand every aspect of the bill. I don’t even know that I want to. I just find it incredibly interesting that a lot of what I’m seeing out there resembles much of what was said before Barack took office.
Speaking of which, many people said that the success of Barack’s presidency would depend on whether or not he got health care legislation passed. Now that it’s a reality little more than a year into his presidency, I’m wondering what this will mean for the rest of his term and for 2012? I’m wondering what the implications will be for all of the Republicans and even the Democrats who were vehemently against it when it comes time to campaign and they’re called out for it? Love it or not, the health care bill is the only thing that’s really been accomplished in the last 9 or so years. And with this accomplishment, it seems that people have gotten more ignorant and more emotional in their commentary.
I’m also seeing a lot more chatter from the Teabag Party about American values and preserving the real American Dream. I won’t say what I interpret this to mean, but I think many of the people who visit this site know exactly what I’m talking about. And when mass ignorance increases, there are usually a series of events that follow and groups that grow simply because folks just want to be a part of something that rages against the machine. I don’t know what the series of events will be, but I’m really hoping that certain organizations realize that the hate and fear-mongering isn’t getting anything done. But of course, that’s just my opinion.
Now that this legislation is passed, where do you think we go from here? Are you seeing an increase in ignorance or are people just as ignorant as they’ve always been? Has the passing of this legislation truly validated Barack’s success as president this term, or is it just a small accomplishment that was a long time coming anyway? Any thoughts and opinions are welcomed on this one. Then again, that’s always the case.
Hoping this bill does something to these damn co-pays,

I’m fairly certain that the ignorance level hasn’t changed, I just think people are more vocal about it now.

People are just as ignorant as they have always been. Now they can direct their ignorance to an actual tangible object. And, they have the fools over at Radio Rwanda (FoxNews and conservative radio)encouraging this ignorance.
I can say more and I will later in the morning. Good post Slim.

I concur with sane85. These displays of “ignorance” have always been on display in middle america, excuse me the “real america”. I’ve always said that these radicals exist and many of my 2520 counterparts argues that i believe this b/c it was passed down to me. Wrong. I have traveled this great country of ours and have encountered these types more times than I care to recant. Take a visit to West Virginia, Kansas, the Dakotas, Montana etc… you’d be surprised what your will find out in the open.
Many a dead animal has shown up on my father’s property. So am I surprised bricks are flying through Congressmen’s windows? No. Am I surprised Re. Clyburne was called a n*gger? Hell no. Fear of change, cowardice, and racial tension are a few of negatives that are woven into the fabric of America.

I’m at a conservative PWI lawschool, and they held a session today on the unconstitutionality of the health care reform bill. Being from Canada (shout out to the great T.O.), I was very interested to see how it would play out, seeing as what y’all eat won’t affect how I use my toilet.
Now, because I’m an “alien” and this all really doesn’t apply to me, I felt like I had no standing to comment. But I will say, ignorance knows no bounds or degrees. I was APPALLED at the behaviour in that room. In the middle of the day, at a school-sponsored event regarding the constitutionality of a bill just signed into law, people were talking about “taking their country back” and the right way to vote, and (even) Obama making up votes and being the anti-Christ. I felt like I was living in an alternate universe – was I the only one watching the news while they were tallying votes?? Seriously, the anti-Christ? If you really believe that then be a damn Christian and care about the effect of your actions on others and stop being so damn selfish with your life – you know, like Jesus said? (sorry, selfish Christians get on my last nerve.) And who, exactly, are you taking your country “back” from? Or do I even want to know? Ignorance scares me.
Oh. and I was the only person of colour (black, latino, ANYTHING) in the room. And none of them found it odd to make veiled racist statements in front of me. But maybe I’m too sensitive…
(sorry for the rant.)

I am DYING to know which law school this was.
But I’ll settle for hearing the actually arguement about how Obamacare is unconstitutional. Conservatives always bring this point up than end up going off on some triade about Obama. If I was a conservative I would argue that its a states’ rights issue. Blah Blah Blah the federal government can not interject in areas not expressly spelled out in the constitution. But its so weak its pathetic (granted the Conservative Supreme Court could overturn it, b/c the have a grudge against Barry), but from an unbias standpoint, its a losing arguement. As long as its an interstate commerce issue than the Feds have all the right in the world to make a law . Black people have the right to sit at the lunch counter based off ketchup crossing state lines. One of the only worthwhile concepts the Republicans offered was based off of interstate commerce, the ability to but insurance across state lines.
Don’t listen to me. I need to study for my Lsats. Everything I probably said was incorrect.

I won’t say what school it is, you know, in case The Man is tracking me and sees where I am and what I’m typing as I type it…yes, I’m big on conspiracies lol.
But you’re right. The vast majority of the argument was that the federal government could not regulate because it did not deal with interstate economic interests under the commerce clause. They also tried to distinguish it from the Civil Rights Act – to which I say, we didn’t need y’all to pass that act, so go bug off now.
And good luck on the LSAT! It actually has nothing to do with what you actually do in law school, and I feel that, like most standardized tests, it’s a poor indicator of performance in law school, but it’s important to them so I hope you’ll do well. Based on your comments, you seem like you’d be an asset to any law school!

Good post. I’ve been avoiding the news for the past few days because of a lot of the ignorance. It’s really ridiculous. I agree with a lot of the prior posts, people have always been ignorant, they just feel more comfortable voicing it now. Also, they now have a lot of mainstream media publicizing their foolishness. It’s really shameful and even more shameful that mainstream politicians are even resorting to ignorance.
I’m not saying everyone has to support the healthcare bill, however, it doesn’t make sense to me that people are all up in arms about a bill that basically extends healthcare to a lot of people who normally wouldn’t have access to it. This especially annoys me because no one was this upset when we discovered that their were no WWDs in Iraq (which I knew from the beginning) and that we had no reason to even start that war. I don’t want to get to technical this early in the morning, but Bush also violated various international treaties that the US is a party to and U.S. laws (the constitution) to start that war, among other things and people who were upset, but there was no “Tea Party” established or any of the foolishness that is going on now. Now that the focus is extending healthcare to millions, folks are threatening to leave the country or want to take “our” country back. SMH

hope notdon’t think the ignorance is growing. I think it is more prevalent than before. Unfortunately for liberals as Bill Maher stated on his show, we complain in front of the tv, while these tea-baggers end up on it…The prevalent disrespect of the President is something that needs to be addressed. I’ve never seen all the shouting, the racial epithets, etc. towards/in the presence of, previous US presidents, but I guess those feelings are for a different post…

Bill Maher’s point about the lack of liberal uproar is beyond accurate. I don’t think its b/c we are lazy, I think its b/c we lack the “all of nothing approach” that the right has.
Most of the Democratic party is made up of moderates who listen to both sides. The percentage of liberals that make up this country is very small. Liberal is a dirty word…. its means you are lose. Wild. A hippie that doesn’t support America.
You will never see a conservative hesitant to call himself one. He will gladly paint himself with the stereotypes of blindly supporting US actions overseas, being a devout Christian, and supporting family values over the arts.

THis!
Democrats are pussys. Plain and simple. That party has been the party of “You Right” for the last decade! Conservatives/Republicans will create Tea Parties and get on TV to spread their message while Liberals will complain and talk to one another.
There should’ve been a Tea movement when we went into Iraq, but also remember that happened right after 9-11 so that type of movement might have been labeled unconstitutional. However, once Bush said “my bad” about the WMDs we shouldve made noise, but didn’t.
GOP is always united for better or worse. The Demset needs to follow suit.

What’s entertaining to me is that a lot of people with the Tea Party and other “conservative” groups would benefit from the health care bill, but they’re too caught up in the racial tomfoolery to see that. They’d rather starve and have no health care than see a Black President make good on his word.

In fact they lost the fight and are heated and you’ve got fox news/glen beck, hannity, rush limbaugh just fanning the flames. The majority of the people protesting are 2520 in their 40s, 50s, 60s. They are scared b/c their population is shrinking. In addition, a lot of these people are steps away from joining klan like orgs if they haven’t already. I don’t tend to frequent red states as a rule but i def aint going now. Lastly the ignorance and anger that we are seeing would not be happening if the person trying to reform health care was white. I read an article that liberal presidents always create more American based “terrorist groups”.
This is just a testament to how sh!tty our education system is. Ppl lack any type of independent decision making ability and/or intellectual curiousity. Instead of researching and reading and attempting to gain an understanding of what is going on, they rather have what they should believe dictated to them by someone else. I state once again that the number one disease in America is stupidity.
Take for instance Larry King Live a few days ago which featured two lefters (Marc Lamont Hill, Aisha Tyler) & 2 righters (a guy who used to work for Mitt Romney and Stephen Baldwin). Stephen Baldwin did not make one substantive argument was there. He said “Obama is a liar” and that “Over 50% of the American Population didnt agree w/ the policy”. All 3 of them looked at him like he was an idiot and the Mitt Romney guy actually told him that that comment wasnt productive. Marc Lamont Hill then explained that yes 50% dont agree with the bill but 1/3 of that 50% actually thinks the bill didnt go far enough. So yea Stephen Baldwin read that stat somewhere but failed to do whatever work it took to really investigate.

Clearly my other post got cut off.
I just want to make another point about universal healthcare. If you are starving and you decide to go into the grocery store and get food so that you don’t die you will still go to jail. If you don’t pay your mortgage, the bank will put you right out in the street. If you walk into the er and say something is wrong with you they HAVE to treat you. It is a federal law. Anyone who shows up to the er is entitled to emergency care regardless of financial situation or even citizenship status. Huh? How is the hospital supposed to pay its lightbill? Mortgage? Yeah, they can’t. Bottom line. If you think heath insurance should be an option and not mandatory then it needs to be optional for the hospital to provide you with medical services. Don’t like how that sounds too much huh?

i CO-SIGN. You can’t be half way… either “Pay or Die” or ObamaCare, which is still not full universal healthcare.
There was a time where I worked part time while finishing college and interning at record labels. Almost two whole years. If I got sick during that time period, I was willing to suck it up and die. I tried to find affordable insurance, but those Cobra rates were outlandish. All a brother wanted was an afforable oprion….. Now all a brother wants is a chance to get my Cigna Insurance back b/c Aetna is the worse. If I had my way, I could just pay to stay with my mothers ‘Empire’ program. Unions have the best benefits. I NEVER EVER had a problem growing up.

People are just as ignorant as ever but you’re just seeing it play out more in the media. The same groups that did not want to see this man win are the ones spreading their hate doctrine to the masses. Of course we all know what “take our country back” means and the true definition of the American dream. That dream does not involve a black man being president, and certainly doesn’t mean equal access to a neccessity such as affordable healthcare. I’ll be the first to admit that I get tired of having the race Issue brought up, but it’s very clear that it is now the focus. The issue is no longer/never was about the bill. Also, let’s not forget that we now have more people carrying guns. That’s a whole new issue but some of these are the same people spewing hate and making threats.

There are so many sentiments expressed on here that are giving me life!!
I know first hand that the ignorance is definitely on display more than ever! The dummies feel now that it is okay to spew racial slurs and encouraging xenophobia because they have groups like the Tea Party being allowed to do it DAILY…it’s their support system.
If it were “Liberals” out there protesting against the GOP, throwing stuff, spitting and calling them out their names, they would be have been tear-gassed and dragged off on their head/neck to jail!
Folks chanting “No to Big Government” …erm newsflash! This Government has always been BIG, BAD and in control of our lives, I could list all the agencies that dictate what we eat, wear, buy goods, drink, walk, learn, earn money etc! Now that the leader is not what they are use to they are displaying their discomfort/ignorance by lashing out in ways that are sickening me! I could go on and on about this….but I just can’t get myself anymore riled up than I am.

As far as what’s next? I’m not really sure other than making sure that those who need health care are able to receive it. The ignorance has ceased to surprise me – it continually & increasingly disgusts me. If anything Pres Obama’s election just exploited the thoughts ppl used to be ashamed of publicly harboring. But once the unimaginable came into fruition, to hell went inhibition. I’m personally glad to see the wolves unclothed. Rather see the enemy’s face & true colors than wonder… The unfortunate thing is that the majority of ppl in this country are maleducated & can’t think for themselves, & subsequently subscribe to whatever gets fed to them. The GOP is loud & nastty, everything Americans have come to love best. Republicans have zero substantial arguments – their transparent agenda is to discredit the pres & dems, & the silly public fails to recognize it hence the emergence of more ignorance. & on top of that, ignorance breeds more ignorance & in the end we have republican leaders sh*tting on decorum & encouraging disrespect within arenas that deserve the utmost reverence. The ish is ridiculous & out of hand.

Good post. I think ignorance is more than just the public ‘not knowing.’ It also involves people not being too lazy to simply look it up. Honestly, every version of the Health Care bill was put online. For the last one, they even made a highlight section for those who don’t want to read through the entire 2000 page bill. People are more satisfied with snippets from the media then simply taking advantage of the transparency the Obama Administration have been pushing for a while now.
Think about it, it only took 24 hours for everyone in the country to know about the CB and Rhianna situation and to develop an opinion. The Health Care bills been online for months and months. People don’t want to be informed and it’s was put right in our faces! People desire ignorance…
And no… The new health care system DOES NOT use federal dollars for abortion. In fact, it prohibits that.

I really want to comment here, but I think that much like what Streetz said, it’s just a bunch of Democrats or liberals yelling about why they don’t agree with the other side. Yesterday, I was out for drink in DC a few blocks away from the White House and we discussed this for a while. I sat in between someone far left and someone far right arguing over the bill and I realized that neither knew what they were talking about. And i’ll be honest 80% of the people who commented above have no clue what they are talking about. They don’t understand the opposition and basically resort to name calling and a blame game. And don’t think this message is only for you because i’ve been a few political blogs in the last few months and i’ve told the opposition that too. Here’s what i’d recommend you do, read the damn bill. It’s that simple. You don’t have to read each page either, you can get a summary really quickly before moving on. I will leave you with this, and without getting into whether I agree or disagree, i’ll skip to the end and tell you some things that concern me about the bill, notwithstanding the need for universal healthcare.
1) It’s $1 trillion. That’s a lot of money for a country that is currently in a defecit. Also noting that this year is the first year that our Social Security Administration will actually lose money on disbursements. In a few years, we’ll be look to find the $8 trillion to prop that back up. Keep in mind that teh Obama administration just passed a $1.1 trillion spending bill as well. And we are still knee deep in trying to bailout our financial institutions. In terms, of fiscal responsibility, while I won’t call Obama irresponsible I will say that we are at the point where you start to wonder. How can we afford all of this? (Don’t forget we are still fighting a war in the Middle East.) And what we don’t want to create in this country is a situation where our attempts at social reform cause our hands to be tied and we are not positioned well to operate efficiently.
2) Obama is my homie and I probably spend more time talking to him on BBM more than anyone else. However, I dare think of what will happen if the GOP gets control back of Congress. Do you remember when Clinton was in office and the GOP controlled congress and NOTHING got done for years. That’s what might happen here in November. Simply put, roughly 50% of this country didn’t agree with this plan. (That number is weighted because remember even the Democrats had to persuade other Democrats to vote for the legislation. Sooo.. that number might be higher.) What does this mean? It means that in November, all those nitwits who did this, may not be reelected. That has been what concerned me the most about this push, is the notion that no matter whether 50% of Congress agrees or not, we’re going to do what we want anyway because we want to do it. (They disguise this by telling you they want to do what’s “right.”) But without Social Security, some people won’t even be able to afford the Universal Healthcare copays they will have to pay. Go figure. So yeah, I want Obama around, so i’m worried that losing control of Congress may be a problem.
3) The lack of knowledge about this plan about how we fund it scares me. At the end of the day the taxpayer pays for this program. There is no business the government is running to pay for this program. It’s coming out of our paychecks. As citizens you have to be OVERLY concerned with how your tax dollars are spent. For example, the clause that states you must have health insurance. Well, is everyone considering that the person who does NOT want healthcare, I have to pay for his healthcare. Something about that is not right. Let me be clear that’s an example, but the point is this… most people do not even know how this is getting paid for and that’s very important.
You have to hit me offline or on @DrJayJack to get how I feel about the plan in its content and theory.
