Top 5 Hip Hop Fails of 2009
The year is more than half way over and hip hop has had a tumultuous 2009 so far. With that said, we couldn’t wait ’til December or January of 2010 to put together our list of hip hop fails. With that being said, we present to you the Top 5 Hip Hop Fails of 2009:
#5 Ace Hood

Lookin' like a chubby lil' wayne. #Fail
Seattle: Who? Oh the dude from Twitter. Yeah… ::Shrugs shoulders::
Slim: I really didn’t know too much about this guy…until he became a trending topic on Twitter. In most cases, becomin’ a trending topic is a good thing. However, as Ace Hood has proved, it can be a major #fail to one’s career. Last week there was a string of #uknowuacehood messages followed by some joke pokin’ fun at the rapper and his less than stellar career. I felt as sorry for this dude as I did for @drakesknee. Nonetheless, a fail. Speaking of Drake…
#4 Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” Video

Sigh...
Slim and Seattle in unison: Worst we ever seen.
Slim: Slow head (pause) shake at Kanye for co-signing this. I like titties just as much as the next man, but damn. Really? You crushed a lot of women’s dreams of a rapper that truly respects and honors women with his music.
Seattle: I like how you’re keeping the ladies in mind Slim, but eff all that. Above all else, this video just had no concept. Which is cool if it’s a regular music video, but you can tell they really tried to make this have some kind of storyline. Well they obviously failed. Basically, this joint was the music video version of “The Happening”.
#3 Nas & Kelis’ Marriage

oo-chie wally wally. oo-chie womp womp.
Seattle: Dude, I didn’t agree to this. C’mon man. I really can’t co-sign to this one. ::Throws on headphones and listens to Nas’ “Life’s A Bitch”.::
Slim: I guess the milk shake went sour. Black love takes a hit once again. As for the lack of a prenup…well, he was screwed either way.
#2 Soulja Boy

The children are not the future.
Slim and Seattle in unison: Youuuuuuuuu SUCK!!!
Seattle: It’s one thing to make bad music, it’s another to dumb down the next generation of Black America. I’m tired of folks saying that he’s just a kid or that he’s getting money. You can get money without messing up the art man. He doesn’t even rap! He just says the hook over and over again in an inaudible voice. It’s like giving Barney a fifth of Jack and telling him to get in the booth. I’d welcome Diddy, Nelly and Mike Jones back into the game if that means I wouldn’t have to listen to this guy.
Slim: We’re doomed.
#1 Black Lackluster Entertainment Television (BET)
(We Refuse to Put the BET Logo on Our Website)
Slim: As I stated a little bit back durin’ the Black in America 2 series, CNN should have done a segment on BET’s struggle to produce quality programmin’. Seems like it’s an adversity they’ve yet to overcome. 2009 has been a particularly sh*tty year for “our” channel.
Seattle: I hate this channel. With a passion. CNN, MTV and even TVOne do a better job at depicting Black Americans in a positive light. The channel run by our own people falls shorter than a midget jumping off the curb. What happened to Teen Summit? What happened to Tavis Smiley? I’d take the mysterious Mama Tigger and her son calling every one his cousin over the crap they have on air now. BET Spring Bling and some bull—t Award Show that can’t decide if they want to be the Image Awards or the Source Awards? My ulcer is acting up as I type so I’ll just end this while I’m ahead. I said it once and I’ll say it again, F**k BET!
Honorable Mentions Go To: Mariah & Eminem’s Beef and subsequent “diss” tracks, Officer Rawse, Anything 50 Cent nowadays, and Pleasure P just because his name is Pleasure P.
Well that’s the top 5 we decided on. Anything we missed? Disagree with the list? Fortunately, there are brighter spots in hip hop. But for today, let’s get the party going…
Hip Hop’s Siskel & Eibert,
Seattle – Wait, so there’s really a rapper named Ace Hood? – Washington
Slim – Somebody’s gotta do it – Jackson

hmmm charles hamilton fails. he was already a borderline nobody with a lame gimmick BUT then he got punched in the face (sigh)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmmAzVAaKPY
and xxl for rating him as someone worth listening to…
if u must talk bad about soulja boy then add gucci and oj to the list. those colored men don’t talk about anything either. at least SB can blame it on his youth.

Im not a fan of the Charles Hamilton aka The Pink Power Ranger but I have to tip my hat to him for being a gentleman and not hitting her back.
In addition, that girl took advantage of the moment to try and embarass him but it back fired with her emotions getting the best of her. FAIL on her part.
But nonetheless he is an overall FAIL!!! He is also a FAIL squared when he mentioned his album and J Dilla being involved in the same sentence…*DEAD*

How is anyone with a trending topic on twitter a joke?
that shit usually means your pizzling (important)… Michael Jackson was a trending topic for maaaad long…
So was Lebron James in the playoffs.
Speaking of which, the Cleveland Cavaliers (more importantly Mo Williams) deserves a fail for sports… homies just disappeared around Lebron causing him to lose to the Magic. Come to NY, Bron Bron….

Co-signage on all counts.
In addition to Drake’s failure of a video, his plan to rerelease a mixtape, for sale, that people have been listening to for over 6 months is a MAJOR fail. Like, why? And if I hear “Best I Ever Had” one mo ‘gain, I will be prompted to kick a midget and steal ice cream from a small child on a hot summer day.
That is all. For now.

Actually, this channel hasn’t been run by our own people for a few years now my friend. Its actually owned by the same 2520′s (VIACOM) that own MTV, VH1 and all the other programs that put on the BULLSKIT programming to dumb down Amerikkka as we know it. Now if you think for one instant they care about helping YOUNG BLACK TEENS w/their problems or having highly intellectual black reporters giving unbiased, uplifting news or a black guy named TIGGER bring by RAPPERS who actually represent what real hip-hop is (I so miss the booth), you’re totally setting yourself up for an epic fail. SO FUCC BET! AND FUCC BOB JOHNSON’S GREED TO BECOME A BILLIONAIRE AND SELLING OUR CHANNEL TO THE 2520′S.

not that anything you are saying is wrong… but I just can’t put this in the hands of the “man.” We are responsible for this mess known as BET.
Viacom does nothing, i repeat nothing, in terms of programming with any of their channels. The top Dog at BET is the closeted homosexual (and best freind to Jay-z) Stephen Hill, head of programming. Hil is in charge of all award shows and specials. Hill has final say on canelling shows. Hill even got Free and AJ fired from BET.
Also getting blame is Deborah Lee. Though she is clearly a blue tooth and I would beat it until she put back BET UNCUT, she has this anti-hip hop campaign with that Hip Hop vs America series. Anti Hip Hop but pro southern rap…
And lastly Reginald Huldin….I had high hopes for Reggie when he got the VP spot at BET. This is the man who director the orginal House Party and Boomerrang and wrote the comic book Black Panther, went to Harvard… and has done nothing … nothing.. but kiss Debra Lee’s behind and try to get in front of the camera. He is also rumored to be downlow and sucked off Eddie Murphy on the set of Boomerrang.
… can anybody find that banned episode of Boondocks about BET? either one feat Cee-LO?

i agree with you CheekZ (and Seattle)!! that’s all i wanted to say since i don’t say it often. lol…
but I have to say that part of BET’s dominance is due to the fact that there are people in the community who continue to watch it. The Tiny & Toya debacle is headed to be BET’s highest rated show EVER!! And the show received higher ratings than CNN’s BIA2 among black viewers. Unfortunately, there seems to be a market for trash in our community. Or is it a case of “if we produce it, they will come”…that a lot of folks support BET just because it’s BET?

I’m going to go out on a limb and say that education/social-economic status has a lot to do with BET. I find that the people see how BET is poisonous typically have a college degree and a professional job or are currently in graduate school. That doesn’t make up the greater majority of people, particularly Black people. I’m guessing that a lot of people identify with some of what we perceive as rubbish. Just a thought.

i agree that education/socioeconomic status is the line in the sand when it comes to BET. However, I think the fact that we don’t have a lot of black shows on television may have something to do with it, too. There may be a lot of people who identify with the BET shows, but if those shows weren’t on the air, would they just stop watching tv all together? I doubt it. Or, if they could choose b/t a Cosby Show and a Tiny & Toya, would they always choose Tiny over Cosby just b/c they can better relate to Tiny? Could a Tiny & Toya even exist if there were anything like the Cosby Show or A Different World on the air now? If any quality black sitcoms, news programming, or talk/roundtable forum show were on the air now?

I agree with Cheekz, but there’s another point to be made beyond “the man” or the race card. It’s a a creative business. I work for an agency that’s owned by a larger holding company.
They make sure we meet the bottom line, but we hold ourselves to a high creative standard. Because if we’re not doing our job, then our rep plummets and our profits will surely match.
Furthermore, they don’t have control over what work we produce we do. I foresee that being the same for BET. That network is producing sub par creative under their own volition, the holding company (most likely) doesn’t have anything to do with it. They will let them rock with this crap as long as they’re turning a profit.

“They will let them rock with this crap as long as they’re turning a profit.”
That unfortunately may be very tru, however, that in turn means as long as it turns a profit, it doesn’t matter if its crap which is the really sad part because I’m sure all of those other shows u mentioned along w/any other quality programming which could be produced by BET wouldn’t get the ratings nor ad sponsors to do the shows hence stickin w/the status quo reality show and following the MTV/VH1 script of bum ass shows which get the ratings and sponsors. Almost like they’re caught in a conundrum…

good list. I’m waiting to see what Tunde has to say about Ace Hood. LMAO.
I think the biggest fail for me this year has to be Kelis & Nas. I really didn’t expect their relationship to make that turn… the BET’s bootleg MJ tribute at the awards was pretty epic too. and yes Charles Hamilton as well..but he’s already disappeared. do still like the ‘brooklyn girls’ song though.
I don’t agree that if you become a trending topic you’re a joke…I mean Amber Rose was yesterday and, “well damn” (no Gucci) is all I can say about that.
Soulja Boy will be on the list every year until he fades into obscurity.

Dang Nas and Kelis. I thought we could make it last forever. I guess forever was only a day.
Lol I’m not going to lie, but I do like the hit singles from Soulja Boy. I learned how to do the little dance one day because I was bored. I blame it on being from the Dirty Dirty South. And yes, Florida is part of the South.
BET should be known as Buffoonery Entertainment Television. That station has been the downfall of the Black race.

How can you hate on the “Best I ever had” video?!?! I wrote a whole post on the greatness of that video. I mean … I loved the fact he finally proved he wasn’t soft and gave the people what they wanted … bouncing breasts.
I actually saw Ace Hood perform once at a club. I’ve never seen someone kill a whole dance floor that quick. But … I will say in his defense … his album was like #1 at some point. I know … I know … I was shocked too.

Personally, I didn’t like Drake. He was singing in all the songs I was hearing, and he just seemed to be real emotional, although I had friends swearing he was really hip hop to the core.
The video was well shot, had a funny premise, and contradicted the song in a funny way that is characteristic of Kanye.
I will defend my love of the video till the last day!

I think its safe to keep BET at the #1 spot for the 2010, 2011 and maybe beyond until further notice.
As for #4, Drizzy Drake’s HOT 97 ‘freestyle’ needs to be included as well. The nerve of him fooling us like that!?! I was already sold on him but the “freestyle” WAS in my top 20 of best HOT 97 freestyles of new artist. I mean up there with the State Property moments, LOX and other MCs on their start.
I mean even if it was pre-written at least memorize it and fool me in that manner. Drake’s video & HOT 97 ‘freestyle’ = A Superb FAIL!

dog lets talk about this for a momment…..
You thought Drake’s Hot 97 Freestyle was one of the best ever?
Better than when Cannibus schooled DMX and Nore?
Better than when Hov spit the orginal verse to History back when Kingdom Come first came out?
Better than when Em and Rocye killed it the night the Slim Shady LP drop on the back and forth flow..LIVE ON THE RADIO?
Not only did Drake read from a blackberry, he under delivered his bars Its wasn’t a straight verse, he was just tying lines together. He tried to self auto-tune to fill in a bar. When Flex switched the beat up and he became lost and asked if they could come back? what?!?!?! Wheelchair jimmy couldn’t go in on some Mobb Deep. And than there is the unforgivable. The awkward pauses when him and flex start talking:
“You gotta understand NYC i just came off the road”
“Hold up. You said You’re in the Aston Martin doing Donuts?!!”
“YEAAHH I SAID THAT. And I’ma kill the game and never give it my condolence”
Beyond Fail.
It funny how a horrible station like Hot 97 can provide so many classical hip hop momments just by being in NY…. no other station can match their relevance.

#2-Key phrase ‘one of’ not ‘the best ever’.
Until I saw the video and put two and two together it explained why he stopped. I didn’t kno it at the time.
But I think we are in agreement overall. That moment was a FAIL in sooooo many ways. I also think Flex baited him too.
But you’re sooooo right kid!! HOT97 makes history with young gun MCs and their moment to shine with a freestyle. He dropped the ball completely

BET is not the downfall of the black race!
Black people are the downfall of the black race!
we can only get mad at the display of ignorance if we are doing something to eradicate the ignorance in our own lives. for some that might mean working as a teacher/lawyer/doctor etc. with our folks. for others that might mean abstaining from shouting out “that’s my song” when slob on my knob or put it in ur mouth comes on in the club….
a TON of black people are entertained by BET…so they keep playing what they are playing.
BET is a problem but the state of Black people is the bigger problem.
i throws no stones though!
ten crack commandments used to be one of my favorite songs growing up and i lived in the suburbs with both of my parents, went to private school, and played outside.
black folks have to make wiser choices about what is entertaining.

I’m in med school, class right now actually, & I don’t REALLY have time to develop my intended argument, but I just wanted to say that urs just isn’t sufficient. I mean I see ur point – TRUE: black ppl need to take accountability for ourselves. BUT it is also true that black ppl w/ power (including BET) need to be setting positive, enriching & stimulating precedents. Media is HUGE!!! I’m sure ur a pretty adept person, so I’ll spare u further discussion of that point, but u can’t deny it’s power & influence on culture, perspective & identity.
A TON of ppl may be entertained by BET, but that’s not an excuse. A TON of these ppl don’t know any better & they shouldn’t be taken advantage of & exploited by their own ppl. We need to educate, not exacerbate. We have to do better in our own lives as well as in our neighborhoods, communities, networks AND (our only, yet still subpar)TV stations to counteract the damage that continues to disparage our ppl.
We need to tackle this “downfall” from all angles & a blind eye can’t be turned on BET. Bet should be a “soapbox” from which we can project representations of ourselves that we’re be PROUD of – & it fails epically. It should be held JUST as accountable for our “state” as our individuals. COME ON PEOPLE.

You can name a pauseable biggie line or an over the top biggie line. But not a wack one. He didn’t have any.
And on the same topic… 50 cent is the worst lyricist to ever sell over ten million (worst then Nelly!). The man has no punchlines. No wordplay. No creativity in any verse sense 50 cent is the future. All hooks, delivery and mic pressence. But I can see through that. War Angel was the first time in his whole career that he ever tried to switch up his rhyme scheme. He was always AABBCC, atleast he TRIED ABBA, wasn’t impressive.

I have a question? Can you name a single battle the 50 cent won with lyrics and not by the use of skits or Brian Pumper..oh I mean Banks coming in and saving him?
He has been out rapped in every battle going back to Ja Rule…but Jimmy Iovine spends enough money to protect him.
He only got Rick Ross’ baby mom cuz his freestyle was so weak.
Nelly went toe-to-toe with KRS-one (when KRS called HIM out.. he aint win, but he aint use any cheap tricks either).

We clearly can’t have this conversation no mo, lol.

50 ended Ja’s career. But he aint do it with lyrics, he did it by turning people against Ja and feeding off the resentment that was building over those wack Murda Inc records.

This summer, all we heard from him is ish we have been hearing for mad long…and all this Best I ever heard ish is watering down that underground edge he had. IMHO, those other cats are gonna leave him in the dust if he doesn’t put out some new and not sing-songy ish very quickly. Please see my comment above about midgets and children.

Tiffy I dig what you’re saying. Honestly its about selling records and furthering the genre which I believe Drake will do. Lets be real is Kudi really RAPPIN?
Drakes Buzz took on a life of its own. If he can deliver he’ll be on super icon status. Think of the other emcees who had a superhuman buzz (before the internets, twitter, illegal d/ls, youtube) and delivered.
Nas, BIG to name 2.

Whaaaaaaaaaaat?!! Wale and J.Cole are far greater than Drake lyrically. The Warm Up mixtape, again lyrically, is better than Heartbreak Drake and So Far Gone.
I admire Drake for his new approach to hip hop and that’s where he is further along than other members of the freshman class. But line for line, Wale and J.Cole are winning.

getting a late start this morning but i think that this is a good list. first and foremost let me get this off my chest.
fuck that so called rapper ace hood. has anyone listened to his album? i have. i downloaded it and was taken aback by the lack lyrical prowess he possessed. after watching him in that cypher on bet i was like damn maybe there is a florida rapper than can you know…rap. to no avail his album is garbage and he is garbage. the only song i semi-like is that cash flow joint and that’s because of t-pain (which is saying a whole lot). now he’s on some plies shit with trying to put out a new album every 9 months. if jay or nas or even fab can’t do that what makes you think you can? o_0
i think number one on the list should have been florida rappers PERIOD. this includes rick ross, plies, ace hood, trina (well maybe not her. i like her raunchiness), trick daddy and especially Flo Rida (i have no words for how wack he is).

charles hamilton’s been takin’ L’s all year. the snuff on camera, him jackin’ black spade’s song and tryna pass it off as his own, him going against all of Detroit when he put Dilla as his executive producer (when not even Mom Dukes knows who he is? disrespectful as hell!), and then he vanishes from the face of the Earth. wasn’t he supposed to have an album out or something? d’ah well.
Asher Roth & all that hype was another fail. i still haven’t heard the album; i just know there was a lot of hype and he didn’t deliver.
Drake’s first live ever TV performance was a big ass fail. Young Money in general that night was a failure. performing “Every Girl” with 10 year olds dancing on the stage? kill yaself.

co-sign all up and through this list, especially Soulja and BET. Honestly, BET and Soulja Boy are working on a collaborative agreement to destroy the souls of black folk. W.E.B. would be disappointed.
As for Drake, I think he is not really a #fail. He had a following before he hit the mainstream, and not just from girls as a lot of the fellas like to claim. personally, I’m just ready to hear something new from him. i htink he has awesome potential to BIG things in game, he just has to deliver. and i agree with tiff regarding this singing crap. I want rappers to rap, dammit. leave the singing to those who can…by the way, who’s ready for the new R. Kelly?

Oh and 50 is the worst rapper ever. He’s even worse than Wayne. I haven’t had an album since Get Rich or Die Tryin. And I regret that…SMH @ myself. And I’m sorry, but, arguing that 50 is a decent rapper b/c of mixtapes is no bueno. The fact of the matter is most mixtapes only reach a limited audience, i.e. diehard fans or ppl. that love mixtapes.
So, in my opinion if you can’t deliver on every album to a broader audience…then, you ain’t got it. A mixtape is supposed to be a hype mix or samples of what you can really do. The album is supposed to be better than the mixtape, so….sorry, but, I’m about a dolla, what the f**k is 50 cents?

Khaled & others were really pushing for Ace. I’m surprised he got another go with album #2. I bumped some tracks, but nothing stuck. I did like his song with Jazmine Sullivan tho – did that one pop off?
As for Drake…I can’t say nothing bad b/c he has T.dot (aka all of Canada) on his shoulders. Its like dissin’ Jesus in a Cathedral or something. But yes, that video was foolish. And laugh if you want, but Degrassi is a staple in every Canadian household. JIMMY!!
LoL @oochie womp womp. Indeed! I thought these two were in it to win it! Oh well…
Didn’t Soulja boy have a breakdown on Twitter not too long ago? My fondest memories of SB are his spirited performance at the BET Awards and watching his Bird Walk video with the sound off (too funny, you must try it!)
