Michael Vick is Free? That’s Cool.

As many of you know, Michael Vick recently got out of jail. I wasn’t even aware until about a week ago when I saw a flurry of messages on Twitter, Facebook, and Gchat announcing that he was free. I actually had forgotten he was gone. That aside, many people were rejoicing as if a wrongfully convicted celebrity or iconic figure had been released. The interesting thing about this was that I haven’t seen protests with crowds of people wearing Free Mike Vick or Free Ron Mexico t-shirts and picket signs…well , at least not with people who were serious. Most folks have relegated his name to animal cruelty jokes and athletic obscurity. Even with his conviction, he’s still a better man than O.J., who despite beatin the case of a century managed to find himself convicted for busting into a hotel room with heat. Dumb ass.
There are also those who shared their outrage with his release—though those people seem to be in the minority and majority (think about it). A few peeps on Twitter have posted messages about setting a murderer free and how the court system didn’t do those animals justice. Of course I, along with everyone else who hasn’t worn t-shirts or shown outright support for Mr. Vick, don’t want to be caught out there for supporting Mortal Kombat dog matches.
But I really did and still do find myself sitting here or there and saying “Cmon now people. Is Michael Vick really that bad?” Unlike O.J., this situation and trial wasn’t as racially polarized. But from my perspective, it seems like the only people outraged with him were/are PETA fanatics and those bitter about athletes not being role models. Yes, I think what he did was dumb, but there are significantly worse crimes that actually affect human lives. Dogs don’t even have souls! Should he have been punished? Yes. Should he have gotten out so soon? Sure. Why not? I don’t hate animals. I wouldn’t eat them if I did. Was my comment about dogs not having souls cruel? Yes, but sometimes the truth hurts.
Do I think he should be allowed to return to the NFL next season? Yeah. Don’t let the man’s God given talents go to waste. Besides, no matter how soon he is allowed to return, his career and reputation have been tarnished forever. He will always be associated with sad puppies the same way O.J. will always be associated with Ford Broncos and double homicides. Vick will be in rap punchlines for at least a couple more years. With that said, I have a few questions for folks today…
Is Michael Vick really that bad? Are there other people that immediately come to mind who have done worse but received less punishment and vice versa? And lastly, what do folks think of this “Animals are people too” mess? C’mon, you know you wanna answer at least one of those.

LOL I agree.. I think if ever there was an opportunity for a mofo to be given community service, counseling and probation Mike Vick was it. I mean cmon he was fighting dogs. Yes its wrong.. but unless you are going to go and arrest every ninja in the hood with a pit bull (cause all them ninjas dog fighting) Mike Vick should have been given a second chance. I mean yall were doing a big boy drug investigation and then got him for dog fighting? OL boy shot a dude at Morehouse and he was sentenced to finish college and mike vic got prison? and even with that.. he did the time he was let free and yall still want to punish him? …..

That whole Morehouse thing made me too angry. he!!, i’m still disturbed by that nonsense, and the lack of a real response from the college.

Animals are NOT people!!!! I can’t stand when the lil folks at PETA sit and protest for animal rights and copare animals to people. They are not humans and they don’t have rights. Does that mean the should be electricuted and shiz, no. Vick spent a year in the joint and they’re still harassing him.. thats ridiculous. There are pedophiles who spend less time in jail than Mike Vick. He sure should return to the NFL next season. He’s alright with me.
-How about people like Bernie Madoff who stole billions form countless people, Dick Cheney who authorized a secret intelligence agency and others to go after. These folks are truly bad. Mike Vick just got a lil caught up

I don’t think Mike Vick’s crime was as bad as these people make him out to be. I agree with all of yaw above; its really not this serious.
Part of me wonders, is it a race thing here? Do you all think it’s more blacks that support him- are we less likely to stand for the dogs?

i agree that what Vick did was dumb, but as other people have said, it really wasn’t that serious. i am a dog owner, so of course i feel bad for the dogs that were killed or injured. however, it’s not like he murdered/raped anyone, or was dealing drugs. i just get frustrated when black athletes do dumb ish (like that dude that shot himself in the club, wtf??)… like seriously, they are making millions of dollars, is all that extra stuff necessary?

I thought about Plaxico shooting himself in the club. He’s another idiot. His only real crime in my mind was carrying the heat, which a lot of people do it seems. Besides, that in itself is legal with a permit. He should have filled out the paperwork.lol.

i’m saying! plus, im sure dude has bodyguards, so is the heat really necessary? i say, leave it to the folks who know how to use ‘em…

Dogs are not people too. They are animals.
What he did was dumb because he is a celebrity. Had he been a regular person, this would have gone unnoticed like all the dog fights in the “hood” not to mention chicken fights in Mexico/Vegas [information courtesy of C.S.I.]. What celebrities need to realize [ATTN: Plaxico], is that you are no longer a ‘regular’ person. Yes you may be down-to-earth, and simple, and humble. But you are held high on a pedestal and need to act accordingly. That means, you do not walk into a club with a gun. You hire goonies to do that. You do not run dog fighting kennels. You hire the slum dwellers to do that.
You wanna know who needs to be in jail? The dude who is 29 with 21 children. And all of their mommas. Every republican who was down with wubya needs to be in jail.

Addendum to today’s post:
T.I. just started his one year bid for packing heat. In one of the songs on his most recent album he talks about how he needed to cop guns to protect his family cuz his life isn’t average because of his status as a successful rapper. In addition to the other questions asked, what do folks think of celebrities feeling the need to carry guns or engage in other illegal activity because of their place in society? More money. More problems. More stress. Is that justification?

If a celebrity is rolling alone, I think they are justified in carrying a gun.
If they have guards, let the guards take care of carrying them.
Think about Sean Taylor. People are gonna try these celebrities because they are trying to come up on some money, etc. FAST.
Additionally, if a celebrity is allowed to carry a gun, they must be able to handle the consquences and responsibilites that come with holding that.

I am very fond of my dog but I’ve never stopped and asked myself whether he has a soul or not…he just family…and for the record there are humans w/o souls.
Regardless of how i feel about fighting pits and animal cruelty I dont believe Vick should’ve received that sentence. Pit fighting is a hobby in the south. I still have an ex from the south who keeps asking me if he could fight my dog- uh no!
But ummm please correct me if i’m wrong but wasn’t most the dirt done by his back o’ the woods fam? I dont believe Vick would have the time to do all that.
The only thing that gets me heated in all this is his family members who pulled a snitchington…
And furthermore..pit fighting..well the original pit fighters were a lot more organized…the dog was bred to fight but medical attn for the dogs was on hand and these dogs were well taken care of…I am against this ghetto backyard pit fighting….

I thought Vick getting roasted alive was just way too much. I mean, I love dogs just as much as the next person (not enough to own one … but u get me), but I feel like the punishment was a little too harsh. Personally, I’m glad he’s out … but maybe that’s just me.

i personally think that the sentence he received was in itself harsh. i’m a dog lover and i in no way condone dog fighting but i do think that in this case it was partially racially motivated.
like jada said in his song ‘what if’, “what if it was peyton manning that got caught fighting dogs?” would there be all this protest about him playing again or serving a longer sentence.
the man served his sentence. he paid his debt to society. leave him the fuck alone and let him make his living. you don’t have to root for him but sometimes people take things too far. like you said there have been far worse crimes committed against HUMANS by athletes with far less outcry. for example. ray lewis (murder), jayson williams (murder), donte stallworth (possible vehicular manslaughter), etc.

Um, yeah – this is totally a race issue. White folks have historically been more attached to their dogs than us. They look at their dogs like little people – and will often treat them better than *actual* people. Oh, and apparently every dog that belongs to them is sweet and gentle, thus they have good reason to flout the law and allow the precious pooches to run off leash.
Can you say “sore spot”?
Oh, and I think Vic was a victim of family snitchin’.

I hope Vick comes back and shows all the haters why they were hating to begin with. He’s the truth… better@ running than running backs, and a cannon arm……them crackers aint want him breaking any records. I guess they felt like damn he isn’t a weed head, not a alcoholic, aint on steroids…….I got it he fights dogs!!! They showed everyone how quick they can steal yo shine with a little media fuckery.
