Our Latest Inventions
Black people have given a lot to American culture and cultures around the world. The filament for the light bulb, traffic lights, the air conditioning unit, jazz, the many uses out of peanut (#SeeWhatIDidThere?). And there are so many more. But lately, our additions to American life have been overlooked. Well today, I’m putting these out there for all to know and put in the record books. Someone start a Wikipedia page.
The Remix
Say what you want about him, but Diddy was right. We invented the remix. At the very least we took it to the next level like most other things. The music industry never heard of the remix before Black people started doing the damn thing. Some DJs may be taking a bit far with these 6:00 minute long remixes, but think about all the hot remixes you’ve heard. The “Grindin” remix is my favorite -- Clipse & all those reggae artists? C’mon buddy. It’s fed a lot of starving artists. Some rappers wouldn’t have a career without the remix, ahem Fabolous and Fabolous Pt. 2 aka Papoose. Neither would some R&B artists, ahem Total. Either way, tell your ear buds to thank us later. Drizzy.

The Fist Bump and Many Other Handshakes
Barack and Michelle may have brought it to the forefront, but our penchant for interesting handshakes has always been there. Whether we hit folks with the “black hand side”, “daps”, the hand slap hug, Jay’s three clap salute to those double-jointed or whatever choreographed handshakes these kids are doing now, we’ve always killed the game. Even CEOs are giving each other daps after killing a boardroom presentation. Let it be known, we made the handshake fun. Respect it.
Style, Steez or Swag …If that’s what you want to call it
Way before GQ, before Style Magazine before Complex, Black men were killing it with the zoot suits. Eff the Europeans. We start trends from New York City to Miami to those dudes out in Cali. America would still be wearing their jeans on their navels if it weren’t for us. We need to find a happy medium, but hey, it’s a start. And it’s not just the gear, we’ve demonstrated that certain je ne sais quoi that many have tried to replicate over the years. It’s no coincidence that the most popular musicians are carbon copies of Black predecessors. Don’t believe me? Ask Justin Timberlake. Or better yet, Elvis.
I rest my case.
I’m sure there are plenty more, but I have to hop on a flight and start a new trend in a small struggling city. What do you have to add to the record books. Do you agree with what I listed? Let’s have some fun today!
Trendy not Fancy,

This is the cutest post lol… nice one Seattle

Oh yeah! Rhythm! We invented it back home [Africa] and perfected it for everyone else once brought overseas. I’m just saying. America would be lawst without it.

So I wanted to reply to Nick but my web browser is refusing to let me be great this morning. Anywho… I agree Nick. If you were born-with it, it doesn’t make the list. LOL. We are so gracious w/ our god-given talents we’ve even tried to teach the 2520s but some of them refuse to learn. LOL.

We made up too many terms for “brother” or “sister”. How about “dun”, “shun”, “son”, “homie”, “ace boon”, “bai”, “slime”, “five” and the list goes on….
We invented making utter BS that we have in the cabinets into a 5 course meal. I seent it

We are the flava in America’s, dare I say the world, not just hip hop’s batter, have been for centuries. It’d be bland as he11 without our ALL seasonsing. garnishings, and spices. Heavily borrowed from, LOL, constantly imitated but never duplicated!!!!!!
By the time the masses do catch on to one thing, we on to the next—-> and the beat goes on.
