The Truth In Advertising, Pt. 2

With the exception of the Olson twins, Americans love to eat. Even amongst the healthiest of us, I’m sure there’s one little guilty pleasure out there that you’d fight your mama over for the last piece/portion/serving. Personally, I’ll eat just about anything. Yes, that too. But the older I get the harder I find it to stay in fighting trim, especially now that I have a sh*tty cushy job and sit on my ass all day. I’m trying to make healthier food choices considering my schedule doesn’t allow me the time or the energy to work out. I’ve cut down on the pork, junk foods, sodas and fast foods in favor of more salads, fish, oatmeal, water and anything else that strikes me as healthy.
I was feeling pretty good about myself and my semi-healthy diet. Then I stumbled across a couple things very recently that made me think twice. The first was a guest on the Colbert Report who’s some sort of world class nerd scientist doing a study on the Potomac river (or whatever body of water that happens to be). From his findings, apparently all the waste that certain companies dump into the environment are slowly mutating the fish and frogs in the water. The males he studied have developed deformed genitalia and are beginning to carry eggs. Yes, eggs. As if that wasn’t shocking enough, he went on to explain that despite your local water treatment facilities best efforts to remove turds from waste water before it’s released back into the environment, they haven’t managed to figure out how to remove the estrogen contained in the urine of women that take birth control. So I guess it’s not Poland Spring’s fault that their water tastes like piss.
Now before you spit your water out, keep reading, it gets better. I receive an e-newsletter from a certain magazine that shall remain nameless because quite frankly, we here @ Three Ways want to be the only thing on your mind. Anyhoo, this particular edition of the newsletter was spilling the beans about the “truth in advertising.” Apparently there’s more than meets the eye in your favorite low-fat, low-carb frozen cardboard entree. While the claims from the makers of Healthy Choice and Lean Cuisine that their products are low in fat may be true, they add a whole bunch of other crap in there to make up for the lack of tasty fat. Instead of dying from a artery clogging heart attack or stroke, these dishes may very well get you hooked up to a dialysis machine. So far all my meticulous eating habits, my cholesterol fighting bowl of oatmeal is killing me more softly than Lauryn Hill and Roberta Flack combined. (Damn, I miss L-Boogie. Eff you Stephen Marley and Wyclef!!) Diet soda will give you high blood pressure, so will those leaner cuts of meat you buy. The healthy fruit bars you’re feeding your crumbsnatchers kids are chock full of red 40 and yellow 69 which are making them dumber and crazier by the second.
As I sit here eating 7 hour old grilled KFC, I ponder the path this breast took before ending up in my hands. It’s no wonder they jack these things up with hormones and steroids so they produce as much as this stuff as possible to meet demand. They are 6 billion people on this planet, hundreds of millions of which are overweight Americans that eat more than their fair share and would probably revolt if every fast food restaurant they waddled their fat asses to ran out of food. So imagine the pressure on the food industry to deliver their products consistently to satisfy their customers and share holders alike. It’s no surprise that they take shortcuts to push their crack on the streets. And let’s give it up for the crafty folks in the marketing department that come up with the sweet words corporations put on their boxes and the even craftier bastards in the legal department that let them know where exactly the line is that they can’t cross.
There you have it. I’m pretty sure you knew you were gonna die eventually, but I’m pretty sure you weren’t aware that despite your actions to do the exact opposite, you are slowly digging your own grave. So what do you think, is this planet really about to crash and burn, or am I pulling a chicken little? Anyone out there trying desperately to eat healthy that have been enlightened? Damn it, stop making me ask leading questions and just comment. Jeez.
Eating sh*t and liking it,

I’m trying to eat healthier but now I feel like my efforts are futile…but I’m trying by adding more fruit to my diet…did the article say anything about that?
And don’t take BC anymore, so I’m one less contributing factor to those frogs & fish carrying eggs…=0/ but now I feel bad for ever taking it…poor fishies & frogies…=0( (I don’t eat frog though)

there’s a list of fruits. Its called dirty and clean fruits. Dirty fruits are the fruits and veggies that are most likely to be loaded w/ pesticides and cleans ones are least likely.
Also buy your fruit & veggies organic and locally when possible

Yes RCLS is bringing the truth to light. Now it’s time to EDUCATE yourself on the importance of healthy eating!
1) Watch out for HFCS – High Fructose Corn Syrup. They sneak this into almost anything. This artificial sweetner makes you hungrier, along with making the food taste mm-mm good. 100% bad for you. Its in sodas, juices, breads, all that. And dont let them swindle you. Fructose, Sucrose, and .ose is hidden names for HFCS. Tunde you do this chemistry sh* right? Break it down. Molecules.
2) The lean cuts thing is true, but I think if you get your meat cut at a deli (grow up ppl) its a little better. Whole foods are the best.
3) Its hilarious to me how the healthiest foods cost the most money!
Read more labels, be careful on what you eat, EXERCISE!!!!!, and remember, everything is good in moderation except for healthy eating and exercising, which you should OD on!
PS – For those who follow me on twitter you know that Cinnabon and Popeyes are like Thelma and Louise to my taste buds. I love junk food but contain the crave in hopes of having the best health and body possible. Light Skin is back now, so I have to act accordingly!
Ciao!

Also, to piggy back off of the farmer’s market comment, find out why certain things are put in foods. You’ll realize that it doesnt apply to you. Right now, i’m on a huge raw milk tip. Meaning that i get unpasteurized milk. You might think that’s nasty. But I’m drinking it in less than 2 days and being that I have all these damn vaccines and shots, I dont really need to fear what comes from milk. Plus, for those who are lactose intollerant, milk naturally has lactaid in it (the chemical needed to break down milk). Pasteurization removes the lactaid. Raw milk is drinkable by the lactose intollerant

Okay. So when I worked in the mall in Albany, my manager and I would look outside the store at what we called “The Cross-section of America” and all we saw was Obese America. Everyone is out of shape and these damn food chains are succeeding in making more of this happen.
I feel the reason the healthier foods are more expensive is that everyone is CHEAP and will spend FIVE DOLLARS on that damn TACO BELL BOX instead of $7 on a bag of organic lettuce for a salad. Who wants to spend over $50 buying organic or whole foods, when the fattening, CHEAPER version is damn near HALF that price? Fat America is cheap as sh!t! So Corporate America, I peeped your #swindle and I won’t fall for it [all the time]. I’m gonna start …SIKE…I’m going to TRY and eat healthier. I’m even going to do Ab Ripper X today. The entire workout is such a big leap right now. My only would-be-problematic body area is the abdominal region. And I’m tryna get my sexy on.

Now I just eat everything in moderation…stuff that is really bad like Chit’lins, Pig Feet and stuff on that order..I save for special holidays like Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Everything on this planet can and will kill you. Heck, breathing has the potential to harm you, too. I just pray over my food and keep it moving!

I honestly feel the more we obsess over what will kill us we’ll just be taking away from truly enjoying life. If its our time to go, that we will. Not to say we should be wreckless with our behavior but just don’t stress over what you truly can’t control. Focus on making everyday count.

It seems as if everything is bad for you nowadays. Like everyone else said modertaion is key. And most importantly get off your ass and work out.
I will not deny myself of food I like. Damn straight if creme brulee is on the menu…I’m going in. But I also don’t have a problem working out and my diet is pretty good.
I will say this…living by myself…it’s hard to by fresh veggies and fruits and it not go to waste. Some days I just don’t want any arugla w/ my lunch. But I just spent damn near $7 on it…so best believe I’m eating it w/ lunch AND dinner.
If healthy eating was cheaper, I believe a lot more people would do it. But these corporations have the food industry on lock and the “little people” who make healthy food end up getting bought out by them. The movie “Food Inc” talks about this.

I really appreciate this post, it’s alarming and also very true, to a certain extent. I’m an environmental engineer who works with drinking water and wastewater treatment plants. No bias here but let me just say that the water coming out of your faucet is more than likely better for you than bottled water. Yes it might taste different but that water meets the most stringent DEP requirements that not all bottled water companies have to adhere to. Just remember that your city’s water treatment facilities focus on water content and meeting regulations, bottled water companies focus on taste and spend money marketing their product to you.
Also, anything that promotes ZERO calories or LOW FAT are more than likly packed with sugar, they lower the fat and add sugar to make it taste good! And not any kind of sugar, aspartame, which is like fake sugar! Scientists discovered it during the course of developing a medicine for ulcers and accidently discovered it had a sweet taste, smh….I mean that just can’t be good for you. Just remember, anything that has ZERO calories and doesn’t taste like water aint what you want!

I used to be vegan, but now I’m vegetarian with a little fish trhow in on the side. About once a month, I have grilled or baked fish.
Anyway, I’ve found that the best thing you can do is cook. We give fast food a hard time, but the big restaurants are really what’s killing people. One meal, over a 1000 calories, 800+mg of sodium, and all the other things on the back of the label you should avoid. Like HFCS, partially hydrogenated oils, etc. You have to educate yourself, and make smart choices in the grocery store.
Whole Food is good, but any local store, selling local, fresh produce, dairy and meat is a good place to start. And don’t think just because you stop eating meat means you will automatically be healthy and lose weight. A lot of people do that, and they end up increasing the garbage they eat rather than increasing the fresh fruit, vegetables, and fiber.
Yes, we will all die some day. But while I am on this earth, I want to live to the best of my ability. I want to be that one 80yr. old women running a marathon.

It’s definitely all moderation. I was taught a good lesson a couple of weeks ago from a friend who lost a lot of weight is that she doesn’t deny herself a thing. She’ll fill up on salad and protein and if she wants a cheesecake she’ll order it but by the time she eats it she has like 3 bites because she’s dang near full. I’m giving that a try.
Also soda is horrible. I try to limit it to solely when I drink on the weekends.

It’s pretty easy to eat healthy. I forgot exactly who said it, but the saying is true: fat people know why they are fat. 70% of dieting is common sense. Now it’s understandable if you go to McDonalds and order a salad with French dressing and think you’re eating healthy. We equate salads to healthy, although with the dressing you might as well have ordered some fries. But you can’t get a Big Mac combo and wonder why your waistline is expanding.
DeSmiles mentioned the Eat This Not That book, which is good. If you are too cheap to spend money, Dr. Clay Hyght’s has an excellent free e-book, Set Your Metabolism On Fire, available at his website, http://www.drclay.com . Both books will get you on track to losing some pounds.

I think that’s part of the problem…dieting. Eating healthy should be a life style. Not something you do to shed a few pounds. I also believe a big component is excercising. Okay, so you eat healthy…but that doesn’t mean you’re in shape. There needs to be balance.

I’m not a fitness/diet guru. I can control my weight pretty well (meaning if i wanted to lost 10 pounds right now, i can). My system is pretty solid, over eat once a week. Under eat the rest. Works like a charm. We can focus on our foods but the biggest problem is over eating. Do little kids really need big macs? I over eat once a week for my psychological health and to eff w/ my metabolism
Remember what humans were created to eat. Vegetables, fruits and legumes and every once in awhile we’d catch a pig or a cow or something. Your diet should resemble that.

Fruits have natural sugar (fructose), just like milk does (lactose). Too much fructose is not good. You can have the shakes, either in the morning or after a strength workout with protein. Just don’t drink them all day.

Streetz was talking the truth about that high fructose corn syrup.. it’s all over the place! i’m always looking at ingredients and saying “that doesn’t occur naturally…. in nature..”
i went through this period where i would eat salmon on baby spinach for lunch everyday.. went to get my hair done and my girl asks me if i’m takin vitamins.. cuz my hair was so healthy.. that was enough to get me to look at my food seriously..
too many people think of “diet” as something that you do for those special occassions (sp?) no, it’s truly your lifestyle..
i actually feel a certain heaviness when i dont’ get enough veggies in my system..
fruits, i gotta work on.. because i HATE spending money on strawberries and there’s not a sweet one in the bunch.. or buying an orange thinking it’s juicy and you open it up at it’s like dust..
just make exercise something you like to do and it won’t seem like work.. i once lost 30 pounds just by going out and dancing..
working out doesn’t have to be work…
but yeah, real food COSTS!! and if i don’t get to the greens in time they turn to ice.. and the apples get gritty etc.. i can’t win..

I eat according to my Island way of natural consumption aka avoiding most things that come in a box. Bc boxes are of the devil. Second, I eat a lot of organic foods but I still read labels bc they can say “organic” but still contain a bunch of crockery. Third, I revere island natural medicines/supplements/ and cleansers. Lastly, I’m pretty daggone healthy and skinny (though that’s genetic)from following my motherland way of life. Most Americans look at me like I’m crazy but when they convert they’re always singing about how GOOD they feel and how much energy they have. Oh well…they have gotten so far away from nature, filled with arrogance of fast consumption, yet they fall by the hundreds each day due to poor diets. SMH
