Why I Love to Hate Drake
I first heard about Aubrey a/k/a Drake a/k/a Wheelchair Jimmy a/k/a Drizzy during the spring of last year (I remember because I was preparing for exams). When people told me that home boy from Degrassi could rhyme, I was like, uh…we’ll see how this goes. I think “Ransom” was one of the first tracks I heard. I was shocked, but I couldn’t wait to hear more. At a time when I was tired of hearing all the other trash music that was out, I was thankful for a fresh voice that entertained me whilst I slaved in the library.
One year, one mixtape, a bunch of features, and an “album” later, Drake is still here with an arguably strong presence and the potential to be around for a while. Yet over the past year, I found myself loving him and hating him all at once. At first, he was new so it was cool. But then, the dude was everywhere. Kinda like Akon and T-Pain before him, his tracks were played back-to-back on the airwaves. And yeah, that’s okay for a little while, but at a certain point, oversaturation became an issue. As I listened to his new album about three times this week, I found myself going back and forth about it and Drake as an artist. Here’s why:
It sounds a lot like So Far Gone.
In theory, this isn’t a bad thing. One of my worries about him getting signed was that his music would suffer at the hands of The Man dictating the way his album should sound. Plus, So Far Gone did well and people loved it, so why not make another one just like it, right? Wrong. Kinda. This album didn’t feel very different than the last one. Its got the swooning tracks, great production, him saying “yeah” a lot, him singing about love lost or getting new love…all stuff that I like enough to keep listening to the album over and over.
He’s mad emo.
I kinda like it and I kinda don’t. He’s a bit whiney. At the same time, it’s endearing, which is why I guess so many women love him. But who are all these girls he’s having issues with? I mean, yeah dudes have issues with women, but Lord. How many women have broken his heart? And is he really knocking chicks up (See “The Resistance”)?
I can’t tell if he’s acting.
I don’t know about yall, but whenever I hear his songs, I have to make an effort not to imagine him in the studio. I still see Wheelchair Jimmy. Now he’s talking about knowing way too many people in here right now, and how all his people are telling him how much he has changed, yet he tells us he’s stayed the same. And are rappers really calling him for help to get their career out of the gutter? I guess anything is possible, but #cmonson.
His rhyme style can be a bit annoying.
“Now I’m really going off. Fireworks.” “Bout to set it off in this bitch. Jada Pinkett.” “I could teach you how to speak my language. Rosetta Stone.” I could go on. Yes, its clever and he’s showing us his word association skills. And yes, we get some good one-liners out of it, but mix things up a bit. Then again, Wayne does that a lot so I guess Drake’s learning from him. Although I don’t know if you want Wayne to be your role model. #Freeweezy.
He’s trying to bring light skinned dudes back in style.
I dunno if he’s succeeding though. When I hear him on a track, I’m like, okay cool. But then I remember how I laughed when I saw this picture:

Despite him getting some women a little moist excited and feeling all special when he tells us we look pretty in our sweatpants with our hair tied back, he’ll never be sexy to me. **shrugs**
And for all you reading this who want to say I’m “hating” or anything off the sort, don’t bother because I’m not. I like the kid. It’s very possible that I’m listening to “Thank Me Later” (love the “title” track, by the way) as you’re reading this. I just had some things I wanted to share. I know you do too. What do you think of Drake’s new project? What about him as an artist? Do you love him, hate him, or have mixed feelings? Are you tired of him or are you looking forward to hearing more from him? Has he lived up to the hype? Share your thoughts.

OK, read it. Well, I don’t hate or love Drake. Just kinda in the middle. He has a nice rap voice, but he has wax face. Not fug, but doesn’t do it for me.
WORD on this, though:
“His rhyme style can be a bit annoying.”
What they called it on the internets? Yoda rapping? Yeah, he does it too much. In fact, it’s all over the place for some reason right now. Nicki Minaj. Ludacris. Plus, didn’t Kanye already do it way back in “Good Life”? lol

Yoda rapping!!
LMAO! I love it. I never heard that one before. But I will make it a trending topic.
It will probably continue until Nas or Jay-z decides to put it to an end. B/c those are the only two people who care about the culture enough to actual say something and push it forward.
o and Jay Elect but I don’t think his influence is that strong.

Hey, booski!
Yeah, I saw it on VSB (in the comments) and deemed it the official term. I call it that now, most definitely. Wish I remembered who it was. They deserve angry (not mad) props.

Ok, I’ma be honest here, and I’m sure more than a few of you will think I’ve had my head buried in the sand. I know Drake is on my radio 80% of the time, but except for a couple songs, I can’t tell which ones are him and which ones are (insert random relatively new artist who has gotten big over the last year). A lot of the songs by newer artists sound the same to me, and I guess I haven’t cared enough to try to distinguish which artist sings which song.Jason Derulo, B.O.B, Taio Cruz, Iyaz, etc. all may as well be the same person to me. I have quite a few of them on my Zune, but I still can’t tie down which artist I’m listening to when a song by one of them comes next in the playlist. #kanyeshrug #dontjudgeme

I recently got the Zune HD after some fool stole my Ipod. So far, I am loving it and don’t plan on going back to Apple as long as the Zune pass is available. Now, if only I could connect through a PS3 the way you can an XBox, but I don’t see that happening any time soon.

Okay i’m done.
looks: eh… he’s cute but i’ve seen better. *kanyeshrug* he looks better than most of the rappers out right now (but he ain’t got nothing on my Korean rappers #don’tjudge)
musically: no comment. only time i’ve heard him was that atrocious “Bedrock” so i can’t say if he’s good or not (via youtube. i don’t listen to radio anymore). But he loses my respect for associating himself with that talentless thing (i can’t even call him a person) Lil Wayne who’s only one step up from Soulja Boy. I mean, he couldn’t get himself under Eminem? Or idk… Kero One? Epik High? Dumbfoundead? MYK? Rakka?

I’m a super huge Degrassi fan and I say this with no shame. So when I heard Aubrey Graham was rapping I had to laugh. The little black jewish boy with the funny haircut? He’s Canadian for pete’s sake. Sure, his character did some rapping in the later seasons, but I mean… there’s a few bars for a tv show and doing a whole album. Very different.
I was pleasantly surprised when I heard Comeback Season. It wasn’t at all what I was expecting and then So Far Gone blew it away.
I mess with Wheelchair Jimmy. Annoying rap style or no…
Still need to listen to Thank Me Later, which I have but…just haven’t listened to. LOL.

I like Drake. I think he’s good. While his flow is a bit stale, his content is a bit refreshing. I’m glad that there are more rappers that I can relate to. Rappers who didnt sell drugs but knew ppl who did. etc.
I think his album has a completely different feel than his mixtape. The mixtape was a mixtape well the album is pretty well constructed and does a pretty good job of telling a story.

ican’t with aubrey.. i just can’t..
he’s like that virus that i watch on “the monster inside me”.. it starts off small in the water supply, then before you know it he’s seeped into all the water supply.. and infected the whole town!
except in this instance, the “town” is the whole country..
i don’t listen to the radio anymore because i don’t find anything of worth on it.. and i have enough “lite music” to last me a decade..
miss jenkins, i wanna set you on fire for that top pic!! just so you know..
i don’t like to hate him.. i dont’love him.. “i nothing him”.. if i happen to be in the car and hear him, it usually takes a minute to figure out if it’s him or lil wayne.. seeing as how they both have that “sound” and a similar guerilla style tactic for assaulting my ears..
ican’t..

When it comes to Drake, I don’t really care about degrassi.. or his hairline or black magic marker eyebrows. I don’t really care about the fact he hangs out with Wayne and em, and I’m not mad at him for the repetitive slow flow or singing. I think he’s talented and he makes good music. (even when it’s not typical rapping)
I do feel like this album is a lil limited concept wise. The songs are all about girls and fame. On So Far Gone each song REALLY had an identity while musically flowing together. On this one it seems to a mesh a bit in a bad way. I dunno tho.. I still gotta listen to it a lil more but he mighta stayed TOO close in that somber sing/rap pocket.
I still messes with him tho.. not on the level of being some new rap messiah like the media tryna push him as.. but i messes.
Reply
Jenkins you’re hilarious!!
All your points are valid. I think this first album was better in ways than SFG. It was clear conceptually and he stuck to his scrpit (mayeb a bit too much)
Like Peyso said, I appreciate rappers who are THEMSELVES and rap about it. This album was for the record sales and a safe beginning into hip hop. The next album will be the Bun B / Phonte / Trey / Clipse type album like comeback season. Im sure of it.
I just hope that he cuts the singing and emoting a few notches and spits like his did on CS.
Also, I heard people claiming that a “corporate machine” made him. This is false. The internet made him. Shyt I knew him from Degrassi and didn’t even knwo he rapped until my little sister told me and I laughed it off. Then I heard the “Stunin is a habit” freestyle and was impressed. When so Far Goine dropped, it dropped on his wesite with promotion from the hip hop blogs and did avatar #s download wise. Who you know could sell mixtapes that are available for free?!
This kid will be around for a minute and I’m waiting to see where he takes it.

I finally listened to “Thank Me Later” (which is such a dick title for your first album… And that’s kind of awesome) and it reminded me of “So Far Gone.” Too much. I like when artists stay true to their sound; however, after a year or so of being on the scene I thought he would’ve grown a little. I almost like SFG better. No, I do.
With that said, it’s a solid album. Women will flock to the stores and dudes will dub women down in the spot when the DJ throws it on.
Some songs are better than others – “Unforgettable” and “Fancy” knock. Some are a bit redundant. I can only listen to heartbreak and new found fame tracks but so much. All in all, it’s cool. He’s not hip hop’s Jesus, but he’s good.

I am a Nicki Fan from waaay back in the day.
Back when myspace was popping.
Lets be honest we are talking about that ‘Barbie Flow’ the “EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND.” She did it bc it gets attention and kids are stupid. That is why they like clowns and power rangers. She said she will try something new on her album.
Its a complete sell out move…however it worked. She clearly has the attention of the masses now, so I won’t hate.
And unlike Foxy and Kim, she actually wrote her own lyrics. Its way to early to say if she is better or worse. But that is like comparing Soulja Boy and Vanilla Ice… the real loser in that contest is us for wasting our time talking about trash. #ImissLboogie

Nicki’s flow is by far sicker than the rest of them. She’s closer to Jay IMHO in that she actually has different flows (she aint close to Jay in lyrical prowess). I like the ability that she can switch it up at any point in the song. Kim, Eve, Trina and whoever else you wanna throw in there have the same flow on every song. Foxy was either the rapping flow or on her reggae flow

Flow-wise I’m still not OD impressed with Nicki.
I still overall take Lauryn, Mia X, Rage, Digga, Eve, Jean Grae over her..
the difference is Nicki is current, and has currently been able to market herself incredibly.
I don’t expect her to be like Lauryn Hill, that’s like asking every rapper to be Nas.
In “her lane” of female emcees I think she’s on top. And “Her Lane” includes the vets of Lim Kim, Foxy, Trina, and newcomers like Diamond of Crime Mon Fame.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan, F*CK Drake. If Weezy’s voice/flow and Kanye’s lyrical content/style had a baby, it would be Drake’s punk ass. While that may sound like an enticing combination, it really isnt. I hardly tolerate R&B cats cryin’ on a record, so why in the hell should I accept from Drizzy? Jenkins, you made a good point about son’s wordplay (don’t let it go to your head chump), it reminds me of Wayne on the Carter. I came to the following conclusions after listening to “Thank Me Later”:
1. Drake is in love with love just like the Libra he is
2. He is officially branding himself as an R&B rap dude
3. He has a good ear for beats
4. I’m tired of him using auto tune
5. Being famous is more of a nuissance to him than anything else
6. This time apart from Weezy is much needed….maybe they’ll stop sounding so much alike
7. I actually like a good number of the songs on Thank Me Later. Its a decent project but I think we all expected more in light of past projects
8. Swizz is just Swizz…I doubt he’ll ever change
9. Now I’m gonna wait for all the freestyles, etc over these beats from Thank Me Later

I actually ignored Drake when I first heard about him. Hip Hop is so oversaturated. Than my man remixed congradulations using the same sample and the internets really started to buzz. I took a listen to the say you will freestyle and I was actually blown away. Deep Bars, real deep. I was warned that there was alot of autotune on the album so I skipped all the R&B tracks the first couple of times I listened. but than one day a cop was following me so I couldn’t hit my ipod to change the song.. and the R&B song was actually good. It wasn’t an R&B song about buying a woman’s love (see the Dream) or making love all night long with no mention of lube or leg craps (see R Kelly, we saw the tape dog. You last 18 mins and 13 secs stop lying.) It was about relationships. By the way Hip Hop catches waay to much heat, R&B is drab, corny, typical too but b/c them negroes is high yellow and have six packs no one makes fun of them.
So when Drake blew I was happy for him. But this music just isn’t as potent. Its a water down version of SFG. The issues he raps about I really don’t care. The production is blah. The R&B is typical (that Dream song is everything wrong with R&B) and he needs a new melody if he knows whhhh aaat, I mean. The middle of the album saves it. That song with Hov has so many quotables and I am shocked at how valuable Jeezy has become to hip hop. He could have used another verse on both those songs.
I was super happy with that middle verse on Show me a good time. Talk about not forgetting where you come from. A J Dilla shout out on the biggest album on the year! Golden. I think he is going to be around for a while, but he has got to stop over hyping his projects. This isn’t a classic.

Drake never at any point over hyped this album. We did. The Media did. The fans did. The grammy did when they nominated a mixtape for an award.
Sometimes you cant help a buzz. Nas, 50, BIG, all had similar buzzes and that was BEFORE the net!
We get mad when our artists dont get credit then get mad when they get oversaturated. Cant have it

yeah well overhyped artists could still drop “it was written”.
nas was hyped soooooooo much after illmatic dropped (like drizzy after SFG). the only reason people hate on “it was written” was cause “it’s no illmatic”.. but if you listen to it, it’s a really dope album.
i feel like drake’s hype might have been too much to conquer in terms of every1 being happy with his release (like nas’s situation) but i feel like he fell WAAAY short of a “it was written”.
if you feel what i’m saying…

I’m w/ Streetz on this one… we (meaning the streets & the media) overhyped his album b/c his mixtape was crazy good. & maybe he feels that he took the best parts of SFG… that’s subjective, could’ve been the wrong parts. I’m not defending the man or the album, all I’m saying is look how long it took for people to recognize some of the genius on “It was written” just b/c they were expecting Illmatic Pt. 2.

This has zero to do with anything, well sort of, idk. My little sister was obsessed with Lil’ Wayne, back when was actually Lil’ Wayne and not Weezy or whatever else he’s called now. Long before anyone even thought about caring, she snatched down her Immature posters and replaced them with the ugliest kid I’d ever seen. She would steady try and convince me and my older sister that he was cute. I almost threw up whenever I walked by her bedroom. What made it even funnier is that we grew up in the whitest ‘burb ever. Who even knew who Lil Wayne was? I think they were the same age.
FF to a few years ago and my little, albeit older, sister tells me about this guy on this crazy Canadian show called DeGrassi. She watches it like she’s fifteen and fills me in. I don’t care. She watches the marathons, the new generation, all of it. And she constantly talks about this kid in the wheelchair.
I think she has a little knack for picking out the hottest rapper or something because look at both of them.
See, that had nothing to do with anything. Sharing means caring, though.
